When considering to develop a “Life Plan” one has to address three key elements and have a sound handle on the issues at hand.
- Spiritual Wellbeing,
- Financial Wellbeing and
- Relationships.
This is why I believe everyone should take the time to create a written life plan document. There are at least seven reasons why I believe this is important:
- A life plan will help you clarify your most important priorities.Your boss has a set of priorities for you. So does your spouse. Perhaps others do, too. But what about you? Do you have a list? What is important to you? The DREAM.
- A life plan will enable you to maintain balance. Some people sacrifice their marriage for their career. Others sacrifice their health or their relationship with their children. But what if you could have robust health, an excellent marriage, and a successful career? I’m here to tell you it is possible-but only if you have a plan. HAPPINESS
- A life plan will provide a filter by which you can say “no” to lesser things.Once you have said “yes” to what matters most, you are in a great position to say “no” to those activities that matter less. Suddenly you have the clarity-and the courage-to manage your opportunities rather than to be managed by them. FOCUS
- A life plan will empower you to identify and address your current realities. You can’t get where you want to go unless you start with where you are. What are the most brutal realities of your life? Where are you falling short? Where do you know you need to improve? SELF AWARENESS
- A life plan will equip you to envision a better future. You need to acknowledge where you are, but you also need to see clearly where you are going. What do you want in each of the major categories of your life? What would they look like in their ideal state? This is where it starts to get fun! FOCUS
- A life plan will serve as a road map for accomplishing what matters most. Once you know where you are and where you are going, you are in a position to create an action plan for getting there. It doesn’t have to be complicated, but you do have to identify the mile-markers and waypoints along the journey. A life plan does that.
- A life plan will help ensure that you don’t finish life with regrets. For many people, life is not turning out like they had hoped. They are disappointed, confused, and discouraged. But it doesn’t have to be this way. While you can’t control everything, you can live your life with a plan and dramatically improve your chances of ending up at a destination you choose. GOAL
The three major components of a Life Plan, Spiritual Wellbeing, Financial Wellbeing and Relationship Management are highlighted below and will be discussed in greater detail in subsequent articles. ~
Spiritual Wellbeing Expand
Spiritual Wellbeing is a clear understanding of who you are and how you fit into society.
Law Abiding -The willingness to voluntarily abide by laws of your society, both written and unwritten.
Personal Integrity – Religious preference aside, your personal integrity is such that you can have a positive impact on the society you live in.
- Moral judgement – In spite of the legality of an issue can you make a moral judgement on the basis answering a simple question, “is it right?”. We call that your Moral Compass.
- Civility, you can agree to disagree without being disagreeable. You are not intolerant of others for who and what they are and can interact with them with tolerance.
- Respecting the balance of nature for you is paramount you and discourage man’s persistent irrational rationalizations of activities that continue the imbalance even if it has personal consequences.
- Honesty, you abide by the motto, “If you tell the truth, you never have to remember what you said!” You buy into the concept that “Not lying is in of itself, not honesty!“
- Diplomacy – you understand your personality traits and how much of it controls your actions and how it affects others. You also understand the personality traits of others so you can morph into their comfort zone.
Mental and Physical Health – are fundamental in coping in the day to day stresses. Stress is the major life force that can be your friend or enemy. Your health is the principle bridle over stress. Keeping mentally sharp and physically fit is paramount.
Fostering these attributes puts your Spiritual Wellbeing in a good place and makes you confident. Confidence produces positive stress in the face of challenges in the pursuit of your goals and promotes taking action to overcome those challenges which in turn, furthers your self confidence and self assurance.
Relationship Wellbeing ExpandRelationship Wellbeing
Unless you are a monk on a sabbatical from society, you will encounter people and perhaps animals that you have to relate to and co-exist with. If you have siblings, children and or a spouse you have to interact with them in a harmonious co-existence. If you run a business, you need to interact with the employees in manner that fosters not only a desire to work for you but that they readily buy into your vision for the success of the business. Yes, you can interact with people in a tyrannical way with position power which can have a short term success and at times when there is no time for diplomacy or inclusivity as a safety measure. In the long run however, civility, diplomacy, inclusiveness and sometimes even humor will have a better chance for successful interaction with just about anyone. For successful interaction with others, one needs to understand ones own personality traits and how much of it controls ones actions and how it affects others as well as recognizing other’s personality traits. Leaving one’s own personality comfort zone to someone else’s to converse in a manner which gets the results one seeks is very advantages.
Financial Wellbeing
I think most will agree that it is empirical that regardless of the DREAM, Financial Wellbeing is a fundamental to achieving most DREAMs. Think of Financial Wellbeing as a state where your cash flow is meeting or exceeds the cost of your current needs and is on track to meet projected cash flow expectations. There are two separate issues that may be at play. Your personal Financial Wellbeing, that is you or, you and your family, for the current and the future. Second, and if applicable, your business Financial Wellbeing. If you own or want to own a business, then its wellbeing and its resulting goal achievements become the engine that drives your personal cash flow and becomes the foundation that can make your personal goals come to fruition. It isn’t an accident that our focus will be heavily weighted in the area of Financial Wellbeing both personal and business. Without the other two elements of Spiritual Wellbeing and Relationships however, the sledding to success will be uphill. The most effective way to see positive results to your financial wellbeing is to have a plan that contains challenging but attainable milestones. Regular, systematic and critical review of progress with examination of both the success elements and the elements that fell short of expectations. Acknowledging the success elements and correcting the short coming elements at an early stage is critical before they become unmanageable. That is why you need a plan the can be reviewed regularly to see your progress against the benchmark and when necessary make adjustments to the what and how elements.
